Spring in “Cowtown”

I heard the chickadees and magpies out chirping away this morning, discussing, I suppose, whether or not to venture out of their tree top homes. A couple weeks ago it was 10 degrees outside, after having been a chilly -37 the previous week. The kids and I put away the sleds and skates and pulled out the bikes. Although still a bit icy, the kids could manage to get around the block on their bikes with only a few slips. My five year old, God bless him(!) learned to ride in these conditions.

Then, the weekend arrived. Friday night it snowed (10cms!). Saturday it snowed (another 15 cms!). But by Sunday it was hot and people were in their t-shirts shoveling the heavy dump! On Tuesday the radio was announcing a risk of thunderstorms, so we tucked away the snow suits and pulled out the umbrellas.

Today it was a sunny 15 degrees and almost all the snow is gone… until next winter? Who knows, but I am heading out to seed my spinach and turn my compost while I can.
